A dental crown is essentially a replacement for the enamel layer of a tooth. It can be used in many situations, such as:

-To fix untreated cavities
-To replace a large filling if there’s not enough healthy tooth enamel remaining to secure a new filling
-To help a tooth that has been compromised by advanced decay, a crack or a fracture that required a root canal
-To repair a tooth that has suffered a small fracture or chip
-To improve a tooth that lacks sufficient enamel to mount a dental veneer

While metal crowns are occasionally used for back teeth, but porcelain crowns are much more common. Porcelain and porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns are needed to restore a tooth that is visible in your smile.
