Sleep apnea, which is commonly associated with individuals who snore, is a process by which your regular breathing habits are interrupted while asleep. In some instances, the disruption could be caused by the airway becoming obstructed or blocked, which is called obstructive sleep apnea. In other cases, your breathing is disrupted due to a failure from brain signals to accurately send their messages to the muscles required for breathing. Both instances are dangerous and should be treated when possible.

Although sleep apnea can affect everyone at any age, it is most common in men over 40 years of age. Additional risks for developing sleep apnea include: being overweight, having large tonsils, genetics, deviated septum, allergies, and sinus problems. If you have or are at risk of developing sleep apnea, it is important to seek treatment immediately.

The dangers of sleep apnea vary greatly. Sleep apnea can cause diabetes, ADHD, depression, high blood pressure, strokes, heart attacks, and even death. If you or someone you know has sleep apnea, seek out treatment options.
